Nano Spotlight: M.J. Fifield

Good morning, friends and followers. The Nano Spotlight train keeps on rolling, and this time it’s bringing you an interview from M. J. Fifield with a special surprise!

MJ’s history with Nano…
2013 will be my fifth straight year of NaNoWriMo. I won three years in a row and suffered my first loss last year. I’m looking to redeem myself next month. I initially found out about it through a friend and just decided to give it a try. It was the most exhilarating and frustrating experience ever. So naturally I had to do it again. And again and again. My favorite NaNo moments come when I hit that 50k mark. It’s a real rush. And the fact that I actually love what I ended up with is just a happy bonus.Big Sunglasses 400x400

What are you writing about this year?
Usually I use NaNoWriMo to experiment in genres in which I normally don’t write, but this year I’ll be writing Part Three of my epic fantasy novel, Second Nature.

Who’s the best character in your NaNo novel?
Not exactly sure who the best character is, but my favorite character to write for is Cate because she’s super sarcastic and her dialogue is always fun.

What advice would you give to all your fellow wrimos?
Don’t delete. Seriously, even if you’re writing something and thinking “this is the worst piece of prose anyone anywhere has ever written” while you’re writing it, don’t delete it. That’s what December is for.

Sneaky Ninja Question! Are you ready if there is a zombie apocalypse?
Well, I have a closet full of swords and daggers, and I’ve carefully studied each episode of The Walking Dead, so I’m probably set there. But I still have a feeling I’d quickly end up as a zombie snack because I really hate running.

Bonus Sneaky Ninja Question! When did you first realize that you wanted to be a writer?
Well, I started writing at a young age, but it wasn’t until my junior year of college that I realized I wanted to be a writer. I had about ten majors before I worked out what I should be doing. I thought I’d be a teacher, an actress, an opera singer, a photographer—anything but a writer. Figured it out eventually, though, and that’s what counts. Right?

  5. Great interview! And I love the photo too. 🙂

I did NaNo last year and am trying to make up my mind about doing it this year. Reading about that “rush” has me wanting to jump in again.
