Hey there! It’s the last day of November, so this is going to be my last Nano Spotlight. I’d like to thank all of my spotlight authors, those who volunteered to be alternates, and those who I wasn’t able to publish this year. Now let’s have a big virtual hand for John!
I saw numerous posts about NaNoWriMo and finally decided to give it a whirl. Considering I had been sitting on “Soldiers” for two decades, I figured it would give me the kick in the pants I needed. Plus, I’d been sitting in my think-tank man-cave for so long, I thought it would be nice to get in touch with humanity again. That was the redeeming social value. At the writers’ meeting, I was pleased to share time with six young writers who restored my faith in the human race! They were so vibrant, intelligent and filled with great ideas that it titillated my soul. NaNoWriMo is bringing together the artists of tomorrow and giving them a platform upon which to launch the inspiration and visions of the next generation.
What are you writing about this year?
Soldiers is an action-adventure novel centered on the exploits of Zzelia Kildare, a private investigator drawn into an assassination plot involving extremist groups in America and Northern Ireland. She is hired by Drew Mc Gregor to track down Sean Tremaine, an IRA volunteer arriving in the USA on a personal vendetta. Only she finds that it was Mc Gregor who murdered Tremaine’s father before seeking refuge in America. She joins forces with Sean and legendary IRA assassin John Malagant in tracking down Mc Gregor, only to find that Homeland Security and the British Secret Service is hot on their trail. MI6 agent Bill Masterson is paired with FBI specialist Darrell Cashew in tracking down Zzelia and her friends, who they believe will lead them to Mc Gregor. The chase takes them from East Harlem to Memphis, and finally to Southwest Texas where Mc Gregor is fulfilling a contract agreement to carry out a political assassination. A romantic angle also develops as Zzelia finds herself physically attracted to Malagant though emotionally drawn to Sean. The threesome try to avoid capture and thwart Mc Gregor’s ambush attempts along with his diabolical assassination plot in this fast-paced suspense thriller.
Who’s the best character in your Nano novel?
I’d have to go with Zzelia Kildare. She’s a spunky young Irish-American woman who overcomes all odds in succeeding in a task that everyone believes she has no chance whatsoever in completing.
What advice would you give to all your fellow Wrimos?
Write, write, write! I started this story twenty years ago! You never know when a old piece of work may come back to life with a new spin in a different place in time.
Sneaky Ninja question! What is your favorite color?
Black. It looks good on me and matches my sense of humor.
