Writer’s Retreat Accountability, Day 1

June 6, 2017

Well, it’s Tuesday morning, but I do have progress to report from Monday. I started a revision of my “Magic Milkshakes” story; starting in the middle, because I’m a little blocked on the new beginning, but I got 404 words written, (not feeling lost at all πŸ˜‰ ) and like the scene so far!

I also sat in on the first day of critiquing for the Young Gunns writing workshop, (not a “short story workshop” as Chris M said, though short stories are the format he uses to teach writing,) and gave critiques for three stories which were well received I think.

Today I’ll be auditing less, (though James Gunn is doing some talks that I want to attend,) so hopefully I’ll be able to keep writing more for this story! Will keep you all updated.

Weekend Writing Warriors – Magic Milkshakes 5

September 21, 2014

Welcome friends, followers, and Weekend Writing Warriors!

I’m continuing on with another snippet from a short story draft I wrote back in June, mostly after I got back from the Young Gunns workshop in Kansas. It was based on a story idea I shared back in the A-Z April challenge: Magic Milkshakes. This is still Danielle talking with her friend Irene.

“I can’t seem to concentrate on the homework,” Danielle admitted.

“Me neither, which is why I think I’ll drop by the party after all. Don’t stress about the milkshake thing–It’s not that big a deal, I was just curious.”

“Aren’t you going to even ask me to come along?”

“You want me to ask you–to blow off a night of studying and come to a party with me? A party that you already refused an invite on from a pretty cute boy?”

“Well, I’m allowed to change my mind, aren’t I? I just said I wasn’t able to concentrate on studying.”

“I don’t see why you’re so upset about these milkshakes.” Danielle’s best friend Irene pushed her geography textbook away across the library table. “If anybody’s got a legitimate beef about them, it’s me. I mean, I only wanted a taste, and she practically wrestled me away from the table. Speaking of which, I thought we said next time you were going to bring some away ‘to go.'”

“Um, yeah. Once I had a taste, I guess I forgot. I’m really sorry.”

“I told him that I had a lot of studying to get through, and counter-offered with a study date at the library. Mister Matthew Brown declined that offer, Big surprise.”

“Are you still going to the library?”

“Yeah, I guess, if that’s okay.”

“Certainly.”

“I’ll be back by eleven.”

“I can always trust on you to do the responsible thing.” Mom shook her head slightly as she left the room.

Weekend Writing Warriors – Magic Milkshakes 2

Welcome friends, followers, and Weekend Writing Warriors!

Well, I’m in Toronto this weekend for Fan Expo, and the power of scheduled posts brings you this snippet from last Monday! I’m continuing on with a snippet from a short story draft I wrote back in June, mostly after I got back from the Young Gunns workshop in Kansas. It was based on a story idea I shared back in the A-Z April challenge: Magic Milkshakes.

Track season was over, so she didn’t need to worry about sticking to her peak hurdling weight–for a little while.

“Thanks Mom.” She inhaled another hit of chocolate and cream.

“So, any big plans for tonight?”

“Just hitting the books.”

“You didn’t hear from Matt?”

“Actually, not that it’s any of your business, but yes, Matt called. He invited me to come along to some crazy party at one of his friends’ house.”

M is for the Magic Milkshake

April 15, 2014

For the A to Z challengeΒ this year, I’m sharing science fiction and fantasy story ideas…

So we’ve got a magic milkshake. Who serves it? A mom of course, to her daughter.

What’s the magic supposed to do? The mom is trying to make sure that she goes steady with a rich boy from a successful family, (despite the girl’s own ideas.) Maybe the boy gets a magic milkshake of his own.

If you’re interested enough to pick this up and write your own version, feel free; ideas are cheap. And let me know! I’ll be keeping the notions vague enough that lots of different stories might be written from them.

Thanks for visiting!
